"With almost half the online urban Indians (48 per cent) undertaking it, online matrimonial search has established itself as a 'mainline' online activity. Twelve million online urban Indians are using online matrimonial search, making it the 13th most popular online activity. It has also been one of the biggest 'gainers' in users among the online activities in last one year," says India Online 2007, a survey conducted by JuxtConsult, an online research solutions consultancy firm.
The survey conducted to understand the Internet users in the country adds, "Almost 60 per cent of users of both the online activities are common, ie 37 per cent of all Internet users use both online matrimony and online dating/friendship sites.
"This is significantly higher than last year when only 9 per cent of all internet users undertook both the activities. In comparison to matrimony, dating/friendship is a more popular online activity with 51 per cent net users undertaking it and it ranks 10th in terms of popularity."
The latest entrant, social networking sites like Orkut, Facebook among others have already rallied up 44 per cent of the internet time with over 11 million Indians getting hooked to it.
Giving a demographic profile of internet users in the counrty, the survey points out that South India leads the online activity with 39 per cent of all net users coming from South.
The survey also points out that only 18 per cent of Net users are women. The percentage of female users using matrimonial sites is further low, with only five percent women visiting matrimonial websites.
The survey, which was conducted both online and offline covering more than 36,000 respondents from 31 cities spread across the country adds, "The popularity of online matrimonial search has really surged in last one year. Last year the percentage of all net users undertaking matrimonial search was only 15 per cent. At 48 per cent usage level now, the category has seen an addition of a 33 per cent of all net users joining the category in this year."
"There is no denying that matrimonial websites are now gaining prominence if we go by the number of people who register with us. We are making it easier for them by bringing out vernacular matrimonial websites which is attracting a larger section of the online matrimonial search users," says Uday Zokarkar, Business Head, Bharatmatrimony Centre.
Bharatmatrimony group (vernacular sites also included) has been voted as the most preferred matrimonial site in the survey. Another activity, which is the second most preferred by online users, is job search.
Searching jobs online is no more limited to big cities and only four out of 10 online job seekers in urban India come from the top 10 metro cities, the survey adds.
A majority of 61 per cent of online job seekers come from non-metro towns -- 31 per cent belonging to smaller non-metro towns and 30 per cent from the larger non-metros, it reveals.
The top three most preferred activities by online users as per the survey are, emailing (95 per cent), job search (73 per cent) and instant messaging (62 per cent).

While foreign brides are surveyed to be generally happy with their lives in South Korea, a significant share has seen the dream of a better life turn out to be an illusion.
A recent survey by a lawmaker of 3028 non-Korean brides in the southern province of North Cholla found that while 56 percent of those surveyed said they were generally happy, eight percent called their married life unsatisfactory.
Most of them cited economic difficulties as a key reason for making their life harder than expected, and 75 percent of those polled wanted to get jobs so they could be more financially secure.
Although 36 percent of those surveyed said they married South Koreans because they loved their grooms, 38 percent said they tied the knot with South Koreans in the hope that they could live in an affluent country and their husbands would help their families back home.
'If money is the reason, the marriage is more likely to end up being a disappointment'
"If love is the reason for a cross-cultural marriage, there would be little room for disillusionment, but if money is the reason, the marriage is more likely to end up being a disappointment," warned Lee Yong-Hwan, who heads the Hansun Foundation for Freedom and Prosperity.
Chinese brides accounted for 41 percent, or 1235, of the wives surveyed, followed by 677 Vietnamese, 516 Filipinos and 389 Japanese.
The law office said that in 2006, one in every eight newlywed couples was cross-cultural.
A gender imbalance caused by abortions of female foetuses has led South Korean grooms to turn to foreign brides. The imbalance is felt particularly in Confucian-oriented rural communities, where 110 boys are usually born to every 100 girls. Most of those girls also leave their hometowns for study or jobs.

Horror Stories of Internet Dating

One such story begins with a young woman who has just gotten out of a poor marriage. She has two children and feels that if she lays it all out there, she will truly find someone who will love her for who she is. She signs up for some internet dating sites and waits for the messages to come. She receives a message from a man who seems pretty nice. He is older than she is, but at this point, she feels that older is more mature. He also lives on the other side of the country, but is willing to move.
He tells her all the things she wants to hear and she trusts him. On a weekend where she does not have her kids, she arranges to fly him to her home so they can spend some time together. They hit it off and things go fairly well. He returns home with the promise that he will return for good in about a month's time. She books him a one way plane ticket and books him a hotel room until he can get a job and rent his own apartment.
He arrives and she takes a cash advance on her credit card to buy a car so that she can transport meals to him and visit him daily. 5 months later, he still does not have a job, is still living in the hotel, and has been in the hospital twice. Her credit cards are now maxed out and she is out of money. She also discovers that he has been chatting with other women online, much as he had chatted with her. She makes him go home. His son back home pays for his bus ticket home and she never hears from him again. This woman had thought she had found someone to love her, but instead, she had found someone who was just looking for a woman to support him financially. This was a very expensive lesson.
Another such story is one where another divorced young woman with children meets an older man online who is also divorced with children. He also seems legit and they meet up the very next day. They also hit it off and see each other occasionally. They do a couple of things with all the kids together and every one gets along. They talk of marriage and more kids, so the woman assumes that they are mutually exclusive. She knows his schedule, but he often has his cell phone off when she tries to call him.
He often says that he will come over at a certain time and will show up hour's late if at all. The times he does come are great. One night, he checks his e-mail from her computer and when he leaves, forgets to log off. She, out of mere curiosity, checks his e-mail and finds e-mails from a woman he has been seeing for a month and they seem pretty serious. She confronts him the next time he comes over and he says that he has to spend time with her because she is blackmailing him over something, but he will not tell her what. So the young woman sends this other woman instant messages wanting to know what is going on and the man is lying. The other woman knows about the young woman, but they are not exclusive so she does not care. The young woman is heart broken and confronts the man and tells him she does not wish to see him.
Other horror stories from the internet dating sites are so much worse than these, although these are some of the more common scenarios. Often, you can find stories on the news channels about women who were signed up on internet dating sites and went to meet a man that they had met online. Some of them never return. Murderers and rapists can so easily hide out behind false identities online. They are often master manipulators who can lull a woman into a false sense of security and get them to agree to meet.
Some of them will even agree to meet in a very public place, but once you meet them there, they will lure you to someplace more private. Beware of the red flags that are often there, but ignored. Don't allow anyone to take you somewhere private on a first date. Stay in public. One thing that I chose to do was not allowing someone to know my address until after I'd met them and was comfortable. Don't even give out your home number if you don't have to. If you have a cell phone, give them that number instead, at least at first. Your safety should be number one.
The internet is full of all kinds of con artists. Not only the murderers and rapists as mentioned above, but also people who are trying to scam for money as in the first story or who are just not trustworthy enough to get a date in real life. There are also child predators on the internet as well in the dating sites. This can make internet dating sites a very scary thing for a single mother. On the one hand, you want to be up front with a potential mate and let them know that you have a child or children, so they can leave if they aren't comfortable with that, but at the same time, you need to protect your children. There is a very fine line here. The last thing any mother wants is to bring someone into the home that is going to harm their child in some way especially physically or even sexually

A Polish computer programmer could face up to three years in jail for linking a Polish word for penis to the presidential website.
Hits on Lech Kaczynski's official website soared
The 23-year-old, known only as Marek W, created a program that caused the official home page of Polish president Lech Kaczynski to rank first in the list of results on the Google search engine when "kutas", a vulgar term in Polish, was typed in by an Internet user.
The computer program did something similar to a practice known as "Google bombing" that links the websites of politicians and companies to insulting words or phrases.
He has been charged with insulting the president.
"This is not a matter of freedom of speech," said Andrzej Holdys, a regional prosecutor in the southern town of Cieszyn.
"If somebody uses a derogatory word to libel the head of state then it’s a clear insult which violates the law." I guess it's not allways good to rank 1 on Google

"The internet brought a lot of words from foreign languages," said Vladimir Dolgov, the head of Google Russia. "But the jargon is now moving into the press and advertising. This is the way language develops and it is a process that can't be stopped."
Concerned by the growing influence of English, the Kremlin declared 2007 the Year of the Russian Language.
The linguists, however, say the fear of English is misplaced.
"Young people always develop fashionable ways of communicating," said Yuri Prokhorov, head of the Pushkin State Institute of Foreign Luanguage.
